Problem 31.27 Easy Free

Digit Product Equal to Half

A two-digit positive integer has the curious property that the product of its two digits equals exactly half of the integer itself. Find this integer, which is unique.

Work it out, then compare with the answer.

SolutionShow the worked solution

Write the integer as 10a+b10a+b with digits a∈{1,…,9}a\in\{1,\dots,9\} and b∈{0,…,9}b\in\{0,\dots,9\}. The condition ab=12(10a+b)ab=\tfrac12(10a+b) becomes

2ab=10a+b⟺b(2a−1)=10a.2ab=10a+b \quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad b(2a-1)=10a .

Since a≥1a\ge 1, we have 2a−1≥12a-1\ge 1, so we may divide:

b=10a2a−1=5+52a−1.b=\frac{10a}{2a-1}=5+\frac{5}{2a-1}.

For bb to be an integer, the odd positive number 2a−12a-1 must divide 55, so 2a−1∈{1,5}2a-1\in\{1,5\}.

  • If 2a−1=12a-1=1, then a=1a=1 and b=10b=10. This is not a digit.
  • If 2a−1=52a-1=5, then a=3a=3 and b=6b=6.

Check: 3⋅6=18=12⋅363\cdot 6=18=\tfrac12\cdot 36.
