Problem 27.4 Easy Free

Fenceposts and Gunshots

Sandra fires her 6-chamber revolver at a uniform rate. The time elapsed from the first bullet fired to the last is 1 minute. At this same rate, how many seconds would it take her to fire 3 shots?

Work it out, then compare with the answer.

SolutionShow the worked solution

Key idea. Elapsed time is counted between shots, not per shot. So nn shots span n−1n-1 gaps.

The six shots from the first to the last span 55 equal intervals in 6060 seconds. Each interval is therefore

605=12 seconds.\frac{60}{5} = 12 \text{ seconds}.

Firing 33 shots, from the first to the third, spans 22 such intervals:

2×12=24 seconds.2 \times 12 = 24 \text{ seconds}.

The tempting answer of 3030 seconds comes from dividing 6060 by 66 shots. It wrongly treats each shot as taking up its own block of time.

24 seconds\boxed{24 \text{ seconds}}
